The Irvine, CA-based recycled rub- ber products company received the highly coveted award during ceremonies in Chicago, IL in April. “It is an honor for us to be rec- ognized glob- ally for such a prestigious achievement." Karoleen Alex- ander WRSG founder and president said. Alexander, who began develop- ing products using recycled tire rubber more than 25 years ago, noted that WRSG systems are designed as performance based systems and to comply with Leader- ship in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited rating sys- tems for the design, construction and operation of high performance Green buildings and materials. One of the largest and most prominent uses of recycled rubber products in the commercial marketplace is WRSG's recent installation of 10,500 square feet of RubberWay® rubberized walkways and 21,500 square feet of porous rub- ber pavement at the world headquarters of the domestic merchandise and home furnishings retailer Bed, Bath & Beyond, Inc. in Union, New Jersey.. For the improvement project, which also included new con- struction, Bed Bath & Beyond was faced with storm water management requirements for a portion of the paving at their corporate campus, according to Jack Smith Super- intendent for Schimenti Construction Company General Contractor for Bed Bath & Beyond. To address the issue, company management looked for al- ternatives to concrete walkways that would not only meet the state flood zone requirements but would hold up to the company's green and sustainable criteria. WRSG's Rubber- Way® met the criteria and delivered the classy, high quality "look" Bed, Bath & Beyond wanted for their headquarters complex, Smith said. " It's terrific that Bed Bath & Beyond incorporated a Green component in their overall construction project and had the vision to make an environmental impact in their commu- nity while provid- ing an excellent walkway surface for their staff rec- reation," Smith said. RubberWay® sidewalks are two- layered systems consisting of a base layer and a wear layer. The porous base layer is fabricated form 100 percent re- cycled tire rubber and a polyure- thane binder. The recycled rubber granules are small and compact well, yet allow for rapid drainage. The den- sity of the system creates a firm, flexible surface that can be applied directly over tree roots. Bed Bath & Beyond's RubberWay® paving system instal- lation used 198,000 pounds of recycled tire rubber which equates to diverting 16,500 passenger tires from local land- fills, Karoleen Alexander said. The Edison Green Award recognizes outstanding efforts by an organization to reduce a participating community’s carbon footprint, create Green Collar jobs through new in- novation methods, and improve community health and self- sufficiency. The winners were judged by a panel of more than 3,000 peers, including business executives, past winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medicine. u WRSG Founder & CEO Karoleen Alexander with Jack Smith, Superintendent for Schimenti Construction CO., General Contractor for Bed, Bath & Beyond, Inc. taking a break on the recently installed RubberWay® rubberized walkway at BB&B's corporate campus.
