The Tirex process freezes scrap tire pieces with cold air, and breaks the rubber into crumb rubber using its patented fracturing mill. This process also separates the marketable strands of steel and fiber from the crumb rubber. ... Environmental Waste International Inc. (EWS) recently completed a successful continuous 24-hour run of its TR900 waste tire Pilot Plant in Sault SainteMarie, Ontario, Canada. This is the longest continuous run in the company's history, an EWS press release stated. The 24-hour run of the com- pany's patented Reverse Polymerization Process produced over 4,000 pounds of carbon black, the company said. ... Elastrix LLC , Pilot Mountain, NC received a $28,000 re- cycling grant from the North Carolina Department of Envi- ronment and Natural Resources in the agency's latest round of recycling grant awards totaling $1.1 million. Elastrix will purchase equipment to process and grind scrap tires into crumb rubber. The company plans to sell the crumb rubber to rubber companies in North Carolina. ... The Ohio EPA awarded a total of $527,670 to 45 com- munities across the state to help clean up litter and collect unused tires, according to an EPA news release. Local governments that receive the grants will use the funding for litter collection events, community awareness program- ming or opportunities for residents to properly dispose of scrap tires, Ohio EPA said. Funding comes from the tipping fees collected at construction and demolition debris land- fills, according to the report. The next community recycling grant application opportunity opens Oct. 1, 2013 and ends February 2014. ... The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Pro- tection (DEP) granted forty-five days more for review of the air quality application submitted to DEP by En-Tire Logistics of Milton Pa. LLC . The Union County commis- sioners asked for the additional time to allow the public time to review public records and supporting documents for a proposed tire-derived fuel plant. Findings of the re- view may determine whether additional time will elapse before a final decision is made on the company’s proposal to build a steam and electric power generating station in White Deer Township that would use tire derived fuel. ... Canadian Tire Corp. , pledged $20,000 to help rebuild the Mary Shadd Public School playground in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada that was damaged by fire on May 6. In addition to helping rebuild the playground, Canadian Tire is also offering volunteer support to install new equipment and will donate new sports equipment for the school. ... Bridgestone Americas Inc. (BSA) broke ground last month for its Biorubber Process Research Center, a re- search and development project in Mesa, Ariz., to investi- gate the use of the guayule plant as an alternative natural rubber source. The groundbreaking ceremony featured key leaders from Bridgestone and the local community. Once completed, the center will be home to a staff of 40 researchers and technicians. The 10-acre site will include an 8,400-square-foot office/lab building, a four-platform, 3,500-square-foot shrub prep building and a 3,100-square- foot mechanical and electrical building.
